VENEERS

THE ESSENTIALS OF VENEERS

First, let’s answer the question, “what are veneers?” A veneer is a super-thin, tooth-colored shell designed to fit over the front teeth to improve appearance while protecting natural tooth enamel. Because dental veneers are elective and primarily for aesthetics, dental practitioners often refer to them as a “smile makeover.” The shells are custom-made to permanently bond to your teeth, covering their natural color and shape. You can choose between partial dental veneers (those that cover your entire tooth) and full veneers (those that cover the entire front of your tooth).Note that veneering involves shaving off a little amount of your enamel; this process is irreversible. Additionally, your teeth and gums must be healthy. So, your dentist will start by addressing any preexisting dental disease or decay before installing veneers.

Reasons People Get Dental Veneers

There are several reasons why people choose veneers over other dental procedures. They include:

  • Repairing damaged tooth: A chipped or broken tooth will unlikely cause medical issues but can impact someone's confidence.
  • Change tooth color: Tooth discoloration can result from root canal treatment, excessive fluoride, stains from tetracycline (or other drugs), large resin fillings, or other causes. Veneers help mask discoloration and improve the tooth's appearance.
  • Change a tooth's shape: If a single tooth or several teeth look different from the rest in your mouth, veneers can help match their appearance.
  • Improve tooth structure: For people with gappy or misaligned teeth, dental veneers can help produce the illusion of straight and uniform teeth.

PORCELAIN VENEERS VS. COMPOSITE VENEERS

Veneers Ashburn VAPorcelain veneers are made of ceramic material. Ceramic has similar properties to your enamel, which makes porcelain dental veneers appear like natural teeth and realistic. Because ceramic has an extremely smooth and impervious surface, porcelain veneers are more resistant to permanent stains- you don’t have to worry about cigarette, wine, or coffee stains.

You also get the option to choose from a range of porcelain shades designed to make dark teeth appear whiter. Compared to full restorative procedures like dental crowns, porcelain veneer teeth have a minimally invasive procedure. What’s more, they are more durable, lasting anywhere between 10 and 15 years.Composite veneers are made from composite resin.

They are cheaper, often costing around half the price of porcelain veneers. Additionally, they require minimal preparation but tend to be weaker and more susceptible to stains. Because they can be fabricated as you wait, composite veneers are typically a same-day treatment. On average, composite shells last five to seven years, after which they’ll need replacing. They are also more conservative than porcelain. For example, when porcelain breaks, you’ll need to replace the entire veneer. But when composite chips, a dental specialist can quickly repair the damaged section.

HOW ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS INSTALLED?

Getting dental veneers typically requires one to three sessions. Here are the typical porcelain veneering steps:

  1. Your dentist examines your teeth to determine whether dental veneers are appropriate for you. The specialist then explains the procedure and may take X-rays of your dental arrangement.
  2. To make room for a porcelain veneer, the dentist trims off a small amount of enamel from the front and side of the teeth.
  3. The dental specialist makes an impression or model of the prepared tooth. The imprint is submitted to a dental lab, which fabricates your custom veneer. This may take 2-3 weeks.
  4. The dentist first places the dental veneer on your tooth during the next session to evaluate its fit and color. They may then trim the veneer to achieve the desired fit.
  5. The expert cleans, polishes, and etches your tooth. Next, they apply special cement to the veneer and places the shell on your tooth. A special beam is applied to the veneer to harden the cement.
  6. Your dentist removes excess cement, evaluates your bite, and makes final adjustments as necessary.

Composite Veneer Teeth

  1. Your dentist prepares your tooth for veneer application. They may trim a thin layer f the enamel.
  2. Before applying composite veneers, the dentist etches the enamel and applies an adhesive glue to help the composite resin material stick to your tooth.
  3. The dentist then applies very thin layers of composite material to your tooth’s surface. The layers of composite resin are hardened using a curing light.
  4. Lastly, the dentist polishes up everything
